00:00:00 Why there's no reward without risk and why you should do the thing that scares you the most, that's what we're talking about in episode 70, I'm Dr. Cari Wise, and this is the Joyful DVM podcast. Hi, everybody. Welcome to episode 70. Today, we're going to be talking about risk and reward. The thing is if we want to live a bigger life,

00:00:33 if we want our lives to be different than they are in our careers to go in a different direction, we have to be willing to take bigger risks. And we're actually made to do exactly that, that being said, many of us don't take the risks that we need to take in order to move forward. We're just unwilling to do that. That is comfort in the fear and the uncertainty that comes with taking a big risk doesn't seem like it's worth it.

00:00:58 But you know, the definition of insanity, right? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. The truth is that if we want something better for ourselves, if we want something different, we need to realize that we will feel afraid in the process. If we think we need to wait until we don't feel afraid to make a change or to do something different,

00:01:20 the truth is that we're going to be waiting forever. And many of us, when we are on the edge of making a big decision and changing up something in our lives, we have this thought in the back of our mind, this, what if I feel worse after I do this thing? So many times, we're in a situation where we recognize we're not happy day in and day out.

00:01:39 We really do want something different for our futures. And when we start to think about maybe changing jobs or changing careers or doing something alternative or developing in some completely different area in our lives, the what if monster shows up? What if I don't like it? What if I'm more miserable doing that? Maybe I should just stay here and keep doing this.

00:02:00 And it's that exact thought pattern that keeps many, many of us stuck, right? Where we are. We don't ever step out bravely and try something different. But the truth is that you're completely equipped to experience fear, the feeling of fear. Isn't a problem at all in this day and age, when we feel afraid, it's very unlikely that we're actually in any kind of true threatening danger.

00:02:25 It's just an emotion like any of the other emotions that we experience. But with fear, it drives the actions of withdrawal. It drives the action of not trying of not moving forward. You add to that uncertainty, which always comes whenever we make any kind of change in our lives, or we consider pursuing something different than what we've been doing day in and day out.

00:02:45 Uncertainty comes up time and time again, we just don't know what it's going to be like. And that's what uncertainty is. The thing about uncertainty is that uncertainty also fosters fear. Think about it in the wild, all the animals, when there's something uncertain, they stick together right there as a pack. And when something seems out of the ordinary, they all alert.

00:03:08 They are very much looking for whatever the predator is. That's about to come and get them. We have some of that own wiring in our brains, but we don't need to be as alarmed about it as what our brain would have us believe that we do. So we have these two things working against us. Anytime we want to make a change, we have the uncertainty because we don't know what we don't know.

00:03:29 We don't know what it's going to be like. And then we just have the fear of doing it. Because again, we don't know, and we're doing something new, those two things together. If we let those be the only emotions that are created around any change that we're going to make, then it's no wonder that we have a hard time making it,

00:03:45 that we tend to settle back into what we're doing. Kind of accept if you will being miserable, as opposed to trying something different that could have a massively big reward for us, both maybe financially and emotionally and overall for our quality of life. We hear that saying better. The devil, you know, but he got to ask herself really, is that really better?

00:04:05 The devil, you know, allows no space for growth change or improvement. It really is just doing the same thing over and over again. And when we intentionally just decide to stay put, when there's something within us, that's kind of prompting us. And we have a dream of doing something different. When we elect to just stay put, what many of us do is then become so uncomfortable or disgruntled in what we have that we start to commiserate about it,

00:04:32 that we start to complain about it, that we start to really feel like we're victims of the situation that we're in. But it's really fascinating when we look at it because we have the opportunity to make changes for ourselves. The only reason we're not making changes most of the time is because of fear and uncertainty, because there is no guarantee that it's going to turn out better.

00:04:51 But the truth is there's no guarantee that where you are is going to stay as neutral or as okay as it is right now. It can also completely decline. What's true is that we have no idea what's going to happen next. And as what we've been through over the last couple of years, if that hasn't driven this point home, I don't know what will,

00:05:08 when we settle, we believe we are safe and happy enough with our current circumstances. We don't consider that those circumstances could change in an instant. Nothing is guaranteed. We don't need to fear this truth. We just need to embrace it for what it is. You will always have you and you are perfectly equipped to live your own life. You are also the only one who knows what's best for you.

00:05:31 So those dreams that you have, those things that you wish that you could do those ideas, that you're maybe not even sharing with somebody else, because you're afraid they might look at you. Like you've lost your mind. Those dreams. They matter. They matter not only for you, but they also matter for the rest of the world. They're very intentional.

00:05:49 And so the more that you try to shove down those dreams and they keep popping right back up. I want you to just notice that that probably means that there's something important there that you're supposed to be paying attention to. And of course you can't see how on earth you're ever going to bring those dreams into reality. You don't know how to do that yet,

00:06:08 but you know what? You're not supposed to. That's the really fascinating thing. When we go and step out and do something different, we make a change. We pursue a dream. Whenever we do that, we never know exactly how we are going to accomplish it, and we're not supposed to, but we find that we can create more certainty if we have a roadmap.

00:06:29 And so if we don't have the roadmap, many of us will never take the first step. The beautiful thing is you don't need the whole roadmap. You only need to know the first thing to do. And when you take that first step, you'll gain clarity and the second step will become obvious. It's fascinating how that works, but it does take trusting yourself and knowing that ultimately you're making the decision that's best for you.

00:06:52 And you're willing to feel uncomfortable and step into uncertainty all along the way in order to make it happen. Remember, you will know what to do in the right timing because in right timing, one step at a time that path will unfold to start that unfolding though, you must take that first step. It will feel really risky. It will feel really scary,

00:07:14 but without risk, there is no reward. You must trust yourself, trust your instincts and know you are perfectly equipped to bring into reality. The dreams that you have, those dreams are part of your purpose. If you're surrounded by people who don't support your dreams, if they caution you against bold change, if they believe that responsible people create a certain kind of life with a steady benefit,

00:07:38 rich job, that promises a good retirement and income all along the way to buy a home and pay off the mortgage and pay off loans and live debt-free and end up with a credit score in the high seven hundred or more. I want you to just ask yourself, is that the life you want that life path was for people before us. It was fine for people before us,

00:07:58 but does it work for you now? For some of us, the answer is going to be yes, but for some of us, the answer is no, and that's okay. We were never supposed to be like everybody else. So are you trying to fit into someone else's definition of who you are and what you should be doing and how you should live your life and what you should care about?

00:08:18 Is it somebody else's definition of you that you're trying to be the decisions you make, the way you spend your time, both in your job and outside of it? Is it a reflection of the true you, or is it an effort to be someone you are taught that you should be? There comes a time for all of us where the dissonance between who we are trying to be and who we really are,

00:08:39 becomes intolerable. We should celebrate this discomfort because it offers us insight into who we really are and what we are capable of. Don't resist it instead. Be curious, surround yourself with people who celebrate you and cheer you on nothing in this life is guaranteed and that's okay. You don't need certainty to be safe. You don't need approval to be loved. You don't need achievement to be worthy,

00:09:10 and you don't need permission to be boldly you. Take a risk. Do the thing that terrifies you. Learn from your results, and then just keep right on going. That's how you build a bigger life. That's how you become who you were meant to be. That's how your dreams come into reality. So get moving. I believe in you and I'm behind you every step of the way.

00:09:32 See you next week.
